- LETTERS, Page 10TORCHING THE AMAZON
-
- "We cannot continue to tear the lungs out of the earth by
- killing its rain forests."
-
- Garry Francell Kaneohe, Hawaii
-
- Your story on the destruction of the rain forest in South
- America was impressive (ENVIRONMENT, Sept. 18). In addition,
- the cover illustration of the peril by Robert Giusti is haunting
- in a way words can't express.
-
- Bruce Tennant Long Beach, Calif.
-
- The rain forest offers little immediate monetary return to
- Brazil, but the Amazon's trees produce a commodity we all use:
- oxygen. If we expect a nation to protect this product, we
- should be willing to pay for it. Countries could be charged
- rain-forest fees according to the size of their population and
- the amount of pollution they contribute to the atmosphere. This
- would provide incentive for a government to protect the rain
- forest.
-
- Diane B. Robinson Seattle
-
- Having spent the past 20 years in the Amazon, I say
- congratulations on a great article that grasps the multiple
- issues at stake in saving this special region. As with South
- America's other big problem, drugs, the answer lies in creating
- jobs, because no one would willingly go into the rain forest and
- endure the heat, mosquitoes and hardship there without the hope
- of finding a better life or wealth.
-
- (The Rev.) Don Kirchner Manaus, Brazil
-
- Perhaps governments would be more receptive to outside
- intervention if it came from an objective source, like the
- United Nations. I wonder if people would accept an environmental
- security force comprising all the other countries?
